Stories of Song opens the conversation to answer what could possibly be the most important question of our generation, how do we return to being the custodial species of the planet, to repair this relationship with the earth and bring ourselves back under the lore, and the law, of the land?

The answer is through story.

The operating protocols of Us, as a species is, and always has been carried by story.

Story that is in a special relationship with place.

Project Summary

Stories of Song

For the first time, through ecolingusitic science, immersive film, and multi-
media, our diverse team will gather and share indigenous wisdom by introducing this language to audiences where such connection has been lost. This project aims to explore the interconnectivity of the Guna Yala culture with nature, and to identify key words and concepts in the Guna language – often those beautifully untranslatable ones – central in their role and belief systems involving environmental stewardship.

Ultimately, through its film-associated experiential media, this project will make viewers wonder why this concept does not *yet* exist in English or another world language. The goal is for audiences and academics alike to consider how much the global culture of today could better reconnect with the natural world through consciously curating words rich in connectivity of the old ways into our own language to meet new needs, to retrieve forward, and to take a step towards becoming custodians of our world once more.

THE INSPIRATION

why?

IT IS THE STORIES WE HAVE HEARD, PEOPLE WE HAVE MET, AND YOUR DEEP CONNECTION TO THE NATURAL WORLD THAT MAKE US SO INTERESTED IN WORKING TOGETHER WITH THE GUNA YALA PEOPLE ON THIS PROJECT.

our mission

This is the pilot project in a forecasted multi-year study that will work with indigenous language communities across the world in order to discover and introduce new vocabulary for environmental conservation into world languages, empower indigenous and First Nations language communities, and create a series of films and scientific studies on the effects of language on behaviour and environmental stewardship.
